In 1870, this enticing sweet was a delicacy, often purchased only by the wealthy. Chocolate was also a well-known medicine. In fact, Charles Delacre, a local pharmacist often prescribed chocolate to fortify or restore health. People loved this tasty temptation so much that Delacre opened up a chocolate store next to his pharmacy. The chocolate soon became so popular that by 1873, Delacre had transferred his factory to a larger building and registered trademarks for his chocolate.
Charles Delacre eventually diversified his business to include a variety of products, such as assorted teas and coffee. However, his first love and his most famous product was his chocolate. After opening his factory in Vilvoorde, Belgium, Delacre decided to add even more variety by marketing biscuits. These delicacies were a huge success!
By 1906, Charles Delacre was ready to retire and, as a result, he gave the business to his son Pierre who continued the Delacre heritage. Many of the biscuits that we know today were created during the early 1900s. Adapting age-old Delacre recipes and blending first-class natural ingredients, some of the most popular Delacre biscuits were born. Some of these successes include Cigarettes Russes (or Roulé d'Or), Biarritz, and Marquisette.
It has been over a hundred years since the birth and early ages of Delacre. Although the company has experienced many successes and tribulations, one thing has remained the same. The Charles Delacre heritage lives on in the development and creation of each and every biscuit, making Delacre a timeless tradition.
